Anti-aging Antioxidant Combination Pill

The oxidative theory or the free radical theory of aging believes that when oxygen in the body is burned or metabolized, cells produce by-products called “free radicals”, which are highly reactive and unstable atoms or groups of atoms with an odd number of electrons.

Naturally, these unpaired molecules constantly look for a partner to bond with, forcibly attracting and absorbing the nearest stable molecule and its electron. When this molecule is derived of its electron, it also becomes a free radical, thereby starting a chain reaction. This reaction often results in the disruption of the living cell, and so cellular damage in protein, fat and DNA molecules begins to occur, which eventually results in aging and other health complications.

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that prevent oxidation of other chemicals by oxidizing first, preventing the oxidizing agent from oxidizing compounds that are more vital to the proper operation of a system. Moreover, they remain stable and do not become free radicals themselves.

The body uses food components such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-carotene, and other enzymes as antioxidants to neutralize these free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the chain reaction. This prevents cellular damage, and subsequently aging of the skin and the body by inactivating the free radicals, and therefore anti-oxidant supplements are considered to be very important in anti-aging skin care.

The result of this theory is that thousands of pharmaceutical companies, as well as the food industry have now started producing anti-oxidant pills such as Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin E supplements as remedies for anti-aging in large quantities.

Some pills such as l-glutathione claim to lighten the skin externally by minimizing the melanin formation, remove skin discolorations, and make it smoother and healthier because of its anti-oxidant properties. Though it is not yet an established fact, millions of people are buying products such as this. Research and development in anti-aging remedies, and specifically in antioxidants also continue to expand.

Amidst the excitement created by anti-aging anti-oxidant pills and supplements, and the progress made by current research on anti-oxidants and anti-aging remedies, some experts such as Walter Bortz of Stanford University Medical School, are of the opinion that anti-oxidants in high doses may do more harm than good.

This is because at higher concentrations, supplements such as Vitamin C and beta-carotene are harmful because they become pro-oxidants. According to them, since fruits and vegetables have hundreds of constituents, they may be more beneficial than taking anti-oxidant supplements.
