Ten Facts about anti-aging skin care

These are ten of the most important facts related to anti-aging skin care:

1. One single most important practice in anti-aging skin care is protecting the skin from the sun. This is because continuous or excessive exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun causes free radical or damaged molecules to be released into the skin which can result in wrinkles, dry and coarse skin, and eventually aging of the skin.

2. Using gentle, simple cleansing treatments such as mild cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen is considered to be the best approach to keep skin healthy and youthful. The use of abrasive scrubs can cause broken blood vessels, scratch the skin and irritate clogged pores so they must be avoided.

3. Loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, as a result of “free radical” damage, is the main cause of wrinkles in older people. Peri-oral (of tissues around the mouth) wrinkles frequently occur in people with a long history of sun exposure, more often in women, and predominantly in smokers.

4. Reactions and side effects such as dermatitis, acne, hyperpigmentation etc can be caused by one or more ingredients in anti-aging skin care cosmetic products. According to survey, more than 8% of cosmetic products available on the market contain such ingredients.

5. Retin-A, originally developed as a treatment for acne, can also diminish wrinkles and fine lines. However, it affects only the outer skin and so it is not very effective for treatment of deeper wrinkles.

6. Rejuvenation of the skin when it is dry needs water and not oil. Therefore, drinking water hydrates the skin from within, and using moisturizer creates a barrier layer on the surface of the skin to prevent the loss of moisture from it.

7. Exfoliating scrubs speed up the natural exfoliation of the skin while deep cleansing masques absorb excess oils and deep clean. However, red, dry or itchy skin can be the result of excessive exfoliating, or removing too much surface oil and sebum from the skin.

8. Cosmetic products that contain synthetic chemicals, especially petroleum jelly and all petrochemicals should be avoided. Petroleum derivatives are allergenic, do not absorb well into the skin, smother the skin, and may cause irritation and acne.

9. Soaps are made of wax and they are too drying and too harsh, so cleansing, which washes away the skin pores from excess of oil, dust and waste matter, should be used for the face instead.

10. Smoking switches on a gene involved in the destruction of collagen contributes, and leads to premature wrinkling and sagging of the skin. One study showed that some 40 to 50 year olds who smoked only during their teens and twenties experience excessive wrinkling. Smokers who quit did regain the color on their cheeks but never lose their wrinkles.
